I read today about the Roman Catholic church in The Philippines protesting against the government’s decision to buy condoms and birth control pills worth US$22mil to be distributed to the poor.
Archbishop Angel Lagdameo stated that the money would be better off spent on education and poverty alleviation projects and I totally agree with this point and I commend him on his practical thinking.
But then he spoils his statement by saying, “They are wrong because the Church forbids them as they destroy the fruitfulness of human reproductive capacities given by the Creator and hence are morally wrong.”
I respect organized religions. I respect their ability to guide the wayward but I detest it when religion plays the role in governing people. The problem arises when religion flexes its influence into elected governments.
Please note: I explicitly mention elected government and this post does not indirectly show support for the Junta or the Buddhist monks. By the way, did anyone else notice that the monks decided to re-accept alms from the military? I have no doubts about the problems in Myanmar and my no-confidence vote in any military ruled country but my reservations are on the true motives of the protests and initial snub of alms by the monks. Did they just happen to feel short changed?
But back to the whole “fuck for babies only” belief that the church so happily believes, to say that sex should only occur with the hope of producing offspring is to put humans at the same level of animals. The next thing you know, we’d be sniffing butts and humping poles when a woman in heat passes-by.
I remember an episode in House where Dr. House meets this rape victim and the issue of abortion of her ‘rape baby’ comes in. If you haven’t watched it, do it. I’m not gonna review it here.
It’s common sense; if you’re against condoms then you’re going to be damn hell against abortions so what happens in that particular situation? If people are poor, should they refrain from contraceptives or premature extraction?
I say, if the wrong is between someone and God then let God’s law decide. If it’s between humans then let human law decide. So should using condoms be against God’s will then let Him do the hoo-hah and just shut yer trap hole. I condemn anyone that claims they are representatives of God when executing judgment or punishment on humans.
But then again, what do I know? I’m just an atheist. Yes, an atheist with a cross tattooed on my arm and the eye of Horus on my back. Quite the non-believer.
On a side note; US$22million would equate to at least 55 million condoms or 880k strips of birth control pills. Also, wide distribution of contraceptives could be seen as a slow method of genocide but there is no indication that this is the case here.
