To Make Things Right

Often when a man is looked down upon, there is a tendency to want to make things right. So was the feeling I had today when we played TM in a football friendly.

Jv and I play with them occasionally and we’re always used sparingly either as second half substitutes or first half starters. To add salt to the wound, we’re always played out of our favorite positions; either played on the left flank or left back. AND if that isn’t enough, when we actually do get to play and in unfamiliar positions, they never seem too keen to pass the ball to us.

So we came back to the same field where these atrocities took place but this time, we brought our own team. It was a mixture of our Sunday and Friday futsal groups. A chance to show these guys what they were missing out on. I mean this in a very heterosexual way. To ensure maximum effect, I opted not to play in my so-called preferred position of center midfield but to partner Jv in attack. The mission; ultimately to win but scoring would be a bonus.

The first half didn’t really go as planned. We were lucky enough not to go 3-0 down with TM being wasteful with their chances. Jv did have a few opportunities. He missed a sitter when the goal looked a sure bet. A shot came in from the left side and found its way to Jv who was alone at the far post. Stretching his leg, he missed by inches.

The second half was when the game sprung into life. Having been fed a wonderful long ball from defense, Jv raced onto it and beat the keeper. With having absolutely no angle to score, he cut it back and it was tucked into the goal by an oncoming player. 1-0.

From then on it was midfield domination for us. We had long spells of possession but it really never came to much. That was until another cut back cross found its way across goal to an unmarked forward; me. This is the first goal in an actual game for me since 1999 when I scored 4 goals in my college league. It doesn’t really help that I’ve been playing keeper ever since. No, wait. I scored one back in 2003. Prolific I am not.

Up by 2 goals, we had our tails up. Many chances but it doesn’t really matter now. The important thing, we finished the game with a 2-1 win; Mission complete. Who’s yer daddy now? Well, this candy store is closed and you ain’t getting no sweets. I definitely mean this in a VERY heterosexual way.
