An Update for Another Treble?
That’s right sports fans; A chance for an unprecedented second treble is on the cards for Manchester United. I’m not talking about a crappy treble like the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup. But then again, when you’re supporting a non-achieving club like Liverpool, any success is welcomed.
I’m talking about THE treble; The English Premier League Title, the FA Cup and The European Champions League. Doesn’t that sound more prestigious and some other idiotic Cup treble?
English Premier League
3 points clear with 6 games left. United have left it hard for themselves. They meet lesser oppositions in Sheffield United and Middlesbrough in the next two matches but it’ll be trickier with the next 3 matches being away at Everton, a rejuvenated Manchester City and main rivals Chelsea before closing out the season at Old Trafford against relegation destined West Ham.
I’ve decided not to make an issue of Chelsea’s fixtures and ignore the fact that they have to play Newcastle, Bolton and Arsenal along the way. Manchester United should do the same. The best way to lose a title is to hope your rivals slip up. Forget about Chelsea. Concentrate on United.
FA Cup
United are safely through to the Finals in Wembley on May 19th. They didn’t look good for the whole 90 minutes against bottom placed Watford but they flashed brilliance from time to time and it was enough to dispose Watford. The only downside to their progress is the injury to Rio Ferdinand which adds to the growing list of injured defenders.
In terms of the FA Cup, players should be back in time for the final. Hopefully, the price of reaching the FA Cup Final will not be losing the league title. They’ll meet the winner of the other semifinal; Chelsea vs Blackburn Rovers
European Champions League
The ‘Holy Grail’ of European club football. It’s on everyone’s wish list because with the title, it brings added revenue to the club and more importantly bragging rights for the fans.
Manchester United vs AC Milan. The last time United met 2 Italian oppositions in back-to-back ties was in 1999 when they won their first treble. That time it was Inter Milan then Juventus. This time around they had to navigate AS Roma in the last round. If you believe in signs then add that to your list. These clubs last met in 2003 in the Quarter Final stage. United lost both legs as AC Milan dictated the tie.
It should be a whole different ball game now. United have matured while AC Milan has struggled for form in the Seria A but they always seem to bring the goods during European nights.
The other semi-final is Chelsea vs Liverpool.
In The End
I’m relishing this scenario; United win the league with Chelsea second, United wins the FA Cup by defeating Chelsea in the final, United wins the European Champions League by defeating Chelsea in the final. Wouldn’t that be dandy?
