My roadtrip to Kota Kinabalu from Kuching. I slept most of the way to Bintulu so these are events that happened while I was actually awake.
We left Kuching around 9am. I fell asleep not long after. We stopped over at Lachau for breakfast and reached Jakar roughly around 1pm and had lunch there. I slept again and didn’t get up until we reached Bintulu which was roughly around 4.30pm, I think. We stopped over for awhile to take care of some errands.

I took the wheel from Bintulu to Miri and along the way, we came across this.
A massive plantation burning. This was roughly 30minutes before reaching Niah. What was significant was this was done when the state was under a ‘no open burning’ order. It’s amazing what is done at night on relatively secluded highways.
We reached Miri about 9pm, checked into a hotel and so ended the day.
We started the next day about the same time. We left Miri and before I knew it, we were at the ASEAN bridge. Got into Brunei, got lost, found Limbang, went into Brunei again and finally Lawas. We were at the Sarawak-Sabah border around 4pm, where I took to the wheel again.
So I was happily driving along, enjoying the very scenic Sabah. Until we got to this town called Beaufort. An ambulance with sirens blazing was coming up from behind me so being a civic person as I am, I pulled over and let the ambulance through. So I continued driving until, suprise suprise, I caught up to the ambulance.![]()
The funny thing, the ambulance was holding me up. For roughly 40km, I tailgated the dumbass who was going only 90km/h and sudden breaking for every pothole. Enough was enough. Guess what I did. Yup, I overtook the slowmoe. As I passed him by, my thoughts were with the patient inside.
For a minute, I wondered if I should give that person a lift. He’d probably get to the hospital faster. Oh, by the way, Beaufort is around 150km to KK. So after overtaking the ambulance 40km after Beaufort, I never saw it again until approximately 50km left to KK, we were stuck in a crawling jam and like a slap in the face, the ambulance caught again. I gave way.
Glad to announce, I arrived safely at KK. Can’t wait to do it again. I love roadtrips. So much fun.
The word ‘we’ refers to my boss and I who were driving up to Sabah to do community workshops.
