Progress

Progress is a double edged sword. What is perceived to be development could also be a bane on nature. When I was 8, I remember swimming and playing in a stream right next to my dad’s village. I can’t tell when the last time I was there but I vividly remember it was still clear and clean. Until I went back there middle this year and to my shock it was a brown as coffee with milk.

image_00069.jpg What happened was that the village was given supplied water but sewage was never implemented so all wastage was channeled directly into the river. Since water was easily accessible with a twist of a tap, the usage increased and the river was exposed to more pollution turning it into an unsightly drain.

As there was no use fo a clean river, it was neglected and it has lost its importance to the people.

But this is not the only reason for its demise. Mass logging upstream initiated soil and dirt to be brought downstream. As the river started becoming polluted, supplied water had to given to the village starting the chain of events.

I didn’t bother taking the extra few steps to the river but I hear you’d be able to fish out used diapers and catch a glimpse of floating human discharge. If this is progress, I hope progress doesn’t come to us any further.
