Names

What is with the need of modern day parents to name their children as weird as possible? It’s like right from birth; these kids are scarred for life. Tom and Kate gave their child the name Suri. On its own, it’s fine. Try fitting in a surname. Suri Cruise. It’s like an actually cruise liner, unless of course they decide not to give her a surname. I have a good last name for her, Suri Rumah (housewife). Brad and Angelina gave their child the name Shiloh Nouvel. Apparently, she is named after her place of birth. It actually sounds good together but just Shiloh is weird. Lampu Shiloh? (Flashlight)

So, what happens if she was born in Bau? As we say in Malaysia, die-lah. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone names their kid Kuching. David and Victoria named their first son Brooklyn. Would they have thought twice if he was actually conceived in Honolulu? That’ll be nice, Honolulu Beckham. Nickname, Waikiki.

Although this happens everywhere, I’ve always thought that celebrities don’t mind making up ridiculous names because they think their offspring will be immune to ridicule but guess again. No one is immune to ridicule, absolutely no one, especially if your parents are celebrities. You get it worse!

In school, kids with weird names are the first to get it. There are loads I can say and make fun of but I won’t do it here because I respect their privacy but I have a friend whose name ends with ‘czyk’. He’s local with no polish ancestral in his family. Again, I am talking about first names. Making fun of ancestral names is so NOT cool.

My Chinese friends sometimes suffer the most because their names are considered in Ping Ying and not in English. So you’d get boys named Yew Ah Fatt or Yap King Kong. Which is a very common thing in the world.

Please, when you become parents, please take the naming of your child very seriously. Let your kids enjoy growing up without the need of being made fun of. Thankfully, I did make fun more than I was being made fun of. This privilege comes with a very nice name. Don’t you think your kid deserves that?
