What is Democracy?

What does democracy mean? I’d like to think that it is the right and freedom of anybody to suggest and criticize on actions and policies of the government. But what does democracy mean in Malaysia?

To question or criticize the government in any form is not allowed within BN component parties. It is NOT allowed. Those who dare question the government are sternly disciplined by the parent party. I’ve heard rumors that the Ministry of Environment in Malaysia is so reluctant to fail government-led projects no matter how bad their EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) are because it would be deemed as undermining the government. The only reason why most have been unapproved is because of pressure from NGO’s and the public which they gladly wait and hope for to be used as an excuse.

But think about how policies are made in this country. It takes 1 person to suggest a motion and everyone agrees unless that person is Lim Kit Siang who always gets motions rejected.

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but the government is smart because they have brainwashed us since little. I bet everyone can recite the songs that starts off “Inilah, barisan kita…”. We have more patriotic songs and airtime than anywhere in the world. It’s fine to be patriotic but be patriotic to the country rather than the government.

And honestly, has our government done enough? Besides proposing to build a sports village in London for RM490mil? There aren’t sufficient schools in Sarawak with many villages relying on generators for electricity (oil prices differ in the interior. Some places reach RM2.10 per liter). Its ok, as long as KL is hustling and bustling, no one will care about children that can’t afford to go to school. It’s easier when they’re uneducated because then their votes are cheaper to buy. Some places it goes for a mere RM10.

With RM490mil to spend on something a few selected Malaysians can enjoy, wouldn’t it be better sense to use that money to cushion the rising oil prices? Or even a tax break would help. Now they say it’s a ‘long term investment’of over 10 years. It seems it’s cheaper to spend RM49mil a year on a building thousand miles away than shuttling sportspeople back and forth for major tournaments. So does that mean the government spends roughly RM50mil on sports?

Will national development thrive once we win the Thomas Cup or a few gold medals in the Commenwealth Games or the Olympics? But expect this to go through. Why? Because they’re (ministers) not allowed to say anything against it. Why? Not allowed. So why are they there in the first place? So normal people like you will feel that you’re interests and rights are being protected.
